Three Decades of Life in the Mafia.taglines

Henry Colina [edit]

  • Equally far back as I can remember, I ever wanted to be a gangster. To me, being a gangster was improve than being President of the United States. Even earlier I beginning wandered into the cabstand for an subsequently-school job, I knew I wanted to be a function of them. Information technology was there that I knew that I belonged. To me, it meant being somebody in a neighborhood that was full of nobodies. They weren't like anybody else. I hateful, they did whatever they wanted. They double-parked in front of a hydrant and nobody e'er gave them a ticket. In the summer when they played cards all night, nobody ever called the cops.
  • Paulie might've moved slow, but it was merely because Paulie didn't have to move for everyone.
  • He knew what went on at that cab stand, and every once in a while I'd take to have a beating. But past then I didn't care. The fashion I saw it everybody takes a beating sometime.
  • Hundreds of guys depended on Paulie and he got a piece of everything they fabricated. And information technology was tribute, just like in the old land, except they were doing information technology here in America. And all they got from Paulie was protection from other guys looking to rip them off. And that's what it's all about. That'due south what the FBI could never sympathise. That what Paulie and the organization does is offer protection for people who can't go to the cops. That's it. That's all. They're similar the police department for wiseguys.
  • One day some of the kids from the neighborhood carried my mother'south groceries all the way dwelling. You know why? It was outta respect.
  • For us to live whatsoever other manner was nuts. Uh, to us, those goody-proficient people who worked shitty jobs for bum paychecks and took the subway to work every twenty-four hour period and worried about their bills were dead. I hateful they were suckers. They had no assurance. If we wanted something, we just took information technology. If anyone complained twice they got hitting and then bad, believe me, they never complained again.
  • Now the guy's got Paulie equally a partner. Whatsoever issues, he goes to Paulie. Trouble with the neb? He tin can become to Paulie. Problem with the cops, deliveries, Tommy, he can call Paulie. But now the guy'due south gotta come up up with Paulie'due south money every week, no matter what. Business bad? "Fuck you, pay me." Oh, you had a burn down? "Fuck you lot, pay me." Place got hitting by lightning, huh? "Fuck you lot, pay me." As well, Paulie could practise anything. Especially stitch bills on the joint's credit. And why not? Nobody's gonna pay for it anyway. And as soon as the deliveries are made in the front door, you move the stuff out the back and sell it at a discount. You take a two hundred dollar example of booze and you sell it for a hundred. It doesn't affair. It'south all profit. Then finally, when there'south zero left, when you can't borrow another cadet from the depository financial institution or purchase another case of booze, yous bust the joint out. You light a match.
  • For most of the guys, killings got to be accepted. Murder was the only way that everybody stayed in line. Yous got out of line, you got whacked. Everybody knew the rules. Simply sometimes, even if people didn't go out of line, they got whacked. I mean, hits simply became a habit for some of the guys. Guys would get into arguments over cypher and before you knew it, one of them was expressionless. And they were shooting each other all the time. Shooting people was a normal affair. Information technology was no large bargain. We had a serious problem with Baton Batts. This was really a touchy thing. Tommy'd killed a made guy. Batts was office of the Gambino crew and was considered untouchable. Before you could touch a made guy, you had to have a expert reason. You had to have a sitdown, and yous meliorate get an okay, or you'd be the one who got whacked.
  • Saturday nighttime was for wives, but Fri dark at the Copa was always for the girlfriends.
  • Run into, you know when you call up of prison, you go pictures in your mind of all those quondam movies with rows and rows of guys backside bars...But information technology wasn't similar that for wiseguys. It actually wasn't that bad. Excepting that I missed Jimmy. He was doing his time in Atlanta...I hateful, everybody else in the joint was doing real time, all mixed together, living like pigs. Simply nosotros lived alone. And we endemic the joint.
  • [after the Lufthansa heist] It made him sick to have to turn money over to the guys who stole it. He'd rather whack 'em. Anyway, what did I care? I wasn't asking for anything and besides, Jimmy was making nice money with me through my Pittsburgh connections. [showing a montage of dead gangsters] Just still, months after the robbery they were finding bodies all over. [police surroundings a truck, open up it to meet a dead man hanging on a hook similar a meat husk] When they found Carbone in the meat truck, he was frozen so stiff it took them 2 days to thaw him out for the dissection.
  • You know, we always called each other goodfellas. Like y'all said to, uh, somebody, "You're gonna like this guy. He'due south all right. He's a skilful fella. He'southward one of united states." You sympathize? We were goodfellas. Wiseguys. But Jimmy and I could never be made because we had Irish blood. It didn't even matter that my mother was Sicilian. To become a member of a coiffure you've got to be one hundred per cent Italian so they tin trace all your relatives back to the old state. Come across, it'south the highest honour they tin give you. It means you lot belong to a family and coiffure. Information technology means that nobody tin can fuck effectually with you lot. Information technology too ways you lot could fuck around with anybody merely as long as they aren't likewise a fellow member. It's like a license to steal. Information technology'south a license to do annihilation. Equally far every bit Jimmy was concerned with Tommy being made, information technology was like nosotros were all being made. We would now have ane of our own as a member.
  • [about Tommy's murder] It was revenge for Billy Batts, and a lot of other things. And at that place was zip that nosotros could practise about it. Batts was a made man and Tommy wasn't. And nosotros had to sit down still and take information technology. It was among the Italians. It was real greaseball shit. They even shot Tommy in the face so his female parent couldn't give him an open coffin at the funeral.
  • For a second, I thought I was dead, but when I heard all the dissonance I knew they were cops. Simply cops talk that way. If they had been wiseguys, I wouldn't have heard a thing. I would've been dead.
  • If you're office of a crew, nobody e'er tells you lot that they're going to kill y'all. It doesn't happen that fashion. In that location weren't any arguments or curses similar in the movies. Then your murderers come with smiles. They come up as your friends, the people who have cared for yous all of your life, and they e'er seem to come at a time when you're at your weakest and virtually in need of their help.
  • Information technology was easy for all of u.s. to disappear. My business firm and cars were either registered in the proper name of my wife or my mother-in-law. My driver's license and social security number were phony. I never voted; never paid taxes. My nascence certificate, arrest sail, and my service tape from the Army were all that existed to bear witness to the government I was e'er alive.
  • See, the hardest thing for me was leaving the life. I all the same dear the life. And we were treated like movie stars with muscle. Nosotros had it all, just for the asking. Our wives, mothers, kids, everybody rode along. I had paper bags filled with jewelry stashed in the kitchen. I had a carbohydrate bowl total of coke next to the bed. Anything I wanted was a phone call away. Free cars. The keys to a dozen hideout flats all over the city. I'd bet twenty, thirty grand over a weekend and then I'd either blow the winnings in a week or become to the sharks to pay dorsum the bookies. Didn't thing. It didn't hateful anything. When I was broke I would become out and rob some more than. We ran everything. We paid off cops. We paid off lawyers. Nosotros paid off judges. Everybody had their hands out. Everything was for the taking. And now information technology'south all over. And that's the hardest function. Today, everything is different. There'south no activeness. I have to expect around like everyone else. Can't even become decent food. Right after I got here, I ordered some spaghetti with marinara sauce and I got egg noodles and ketchup. I'one thousand an average nobody. I get to live the rest of my life similar a schnook.

Karen Hill [edit]

  • One night, Bobby Vinton sent us champagne. There was aught similar information technology. I didn't retrieve there was annihilation strange in any of this. You know, a twenty-ane-year-quondam kid with such connections. He was an heady guy. He was really nice. He introduced me to everybody. Everybody wanted to exist squeamish to him. And he knew how to handle it.
  • I know there are women, like my best friends, who would have gotten out of at that place the minute their boyfriend gave them a gun to hide. Merely I didn't. I gotta admit the truth. Information technology turned me on.
  • Well, we weren't married to nine-to-five guys, but the first time I realized how unlike was when Mickey had a hostess party. They had bad peel and wore too much make-upwardly. I mean, they didn't await very adept. They looked beat-up. And the stuff they wore was thrown together and inexpensive. A lot of pant suits and double knits. And they talked about how rotten their kids were and about beating them with broom handles and leather belts. But that the kids still didn't pay any attention...Afterward a while, it got to be all normal. None of it seemed similar crimes. It was more than like Henry was enterprising and that he and the guys were making a few bucks hustling, while the other guys were sitting on their asses waiting for paw-outs. Our husbands weren't brain surgeons. They were blue-neckband guys. The only mode they could make extra money, real extra money, was to go out and cut a few corners...We were all so very shut. I mean, there were never any outsiders effectually. Admittedly never. And being together all the time fabricated everything seem all the more normal.
  • We always did everything together and we always were in the same crowd. Anniversaries, christenings. We only went to each other's houses. The women played cards, and when the kids were built-in, Mickey and Jimmy were always the first at the hospital. And when we went to the Islands or Vegas to vacation, we always went together. No outsiders, ever. It got to be normal. It got to where I was even proud that I had the kind of husband who was willing to get out and risk his neck but to get united states the piddling extras.
  • Just notwithstanding I couldn't hurt him. How could I injure him? I couldn't even bring myself to get out him. The truth was that no affair how bad I felt I was still very attracted to him. Why should I give him to someone else? Why should she win?

Dialogue [edit]

Jimmy: [To young Henry, afterward he gets cleared in court] Congratulations, here'south your graduation present [Puts money in Henry's pocket]
Henry: For what? I got pinched.
Jimmy: Hey, everybody gets pinched, but you did information technology right. Yous told 'em nothing and they got nothing.
Henry: I thought you'd be mad.
Jimmy: I'm non mad, I'chiliad proud of ya. Yous took your first pinch like a man, and you learned the two most important things in life. You listenin'? Never rat on your friends, and Always go on your mouth shut. [Gives Henry an affectionate light slap on the cheek and leads him out of the courtroom. Outside, Paulie and many of the other gangsters are waiting for him.]
Paulie: Hey, you broke yer ruddy! [The other gangsters cheer and congratulate Henry]

Henry: You're a pistol! You're really funny. You're actually funny!
Tommy: What do you hateful I'm funny?
Henry: It's funny, you know. It'due south a good story, information technology's funny, y'all're a funny guy!
Tommy: [dangerously] What do y'all mean? You mean the manner I talk? What?
[Everyone becomes quiet]
Henry: Information technology's simply, you know, you're just funny. Information technology'due south funny, the mode you lot tell the story and everything.
Tommy: Funny how? I mean, what's funny about it?
Anthony: Tommy, no, you got it all wrong —
Tommy: Oh, oh, Anthony. He's a big boy, he knows what he said. [to Henry] What did ya say? Funny how?
Anthony: You lot're right.
Henry: Just —
Tommy: What?
Henry: Just, ya know, you're funny.
Tommy: You mean, let me understand this, 'crusade, ya know possibly it's me, I'm a little fucked upward perhaps, simply I'm funny how? I hateful funny like I'thou a clown? I amuse you? I make you express mirth, I'yard here to fuckin' amuse you? What practise y'all mean funny? Funny how? How am I funny?
Henry: Just... yous know, how y'all tell the story — what?
Tommy: No, no, I don't know. You said it! How do I know? Yous said I'yard funny. How the fuck am I funny? What the fuck is so funny nigh me?! Tell me, tell me what's funny!
[Long break]
Henry: Go the fuck out of hither, Tommy!
[Anybody laughs]
Tommy: Ya motherfucker! I almost had him, I nearly had him! Yous stuttering prick, you! Frankie, was he shaking? I wonder most yous sometimes, Henry. You may fold under questioning!

Karen: [narrating] After awhile, information technology got to be all normal. None of it seemed like law-breaking. Information technology was more similar Henry was enterprising, and that he and the guys were making a few bucks hustling, while all the other guys were sitting on their asses, waiting for handouts. Our husbands weren't brain surgeons, they were blue-collar guys. The only way they could brand extra money, real extra coin, was to go out and cutting a few corners.
[Cuts to Henry and Tommy hijacking a truck]
Tommy: Where's the strongbox, you lot fuckin' varmint?!
Karen: [narrating] We were all so very close. I mean, in that location were never whatever outsiders around. Absolutely never. And beingness together all the time made everything seem all the more than normal.

Karen: [narrating, at a makeup political party with other wives] It was rough seeing the wives of other gangsters. They did not take care of themselves; they looked beat up and their faces were caked with makeup. About of the fourth dimension was spent talking about how rotten their kids were; how they decked them or whipped them with electrical wiring and the kids still wouldn't pay attention. [later in her bedroom] I don't think I can do it, Henry.
Henry: Do what?
Karen: This whole thing. Jeannie said her husband was sent to jail. God forbid, what if that happened to you?
Henry: Bet she didn't tell you why her hubby went there?
Karen: How come?
Henry: To get away from Jeannie! Karen, when information technology comes to the Mafia no one goes to jail unless they want to. We shell the system and I got it all figured out. I am organized; I got my shit together. You lot know who goes to jail? Nigger stickup men. Know why they get caught? Because they fall asleep in the getaway car.

Tommy: Just don't go bustin' my balls, Billy, okay?
Baton: Hey, Tommy, if I was gonna suspension your balls, I'd tell y'all to become home and get your shine box. [To his friends] Now this kid, this kid was great. They, they used to telephone call him Spitshine Tommy. I swear to God! Now he'd make your shoes wait similar fuckin' mirrors. 'Scuse my language. He was terrific, he was the all-time. He made a lot of money, too. Salud, Tommy!
Tommy: No more than shines, Billy.
Billy: What?
Tommy: I said no more than shines. Maybe you lot didn't hear near information technology, you've been away a long time; they didn't go upwardly there and tell you. I don't shine shoes anymore.
Billy: Relax, will ya? Y'all flipped right out, what'south got into you? I'm breakin' your balls a footling flake, that's all. I'm only kiddin' with ya.
Tommy: Sometimes you lot don't sound like you're kidding, you know? There's a lotta people around...
Billy: Tommy, I'm but kiddin' with yous. We're having a party and I only came home, and I oasis't seen you in a long time, and I'm breakin' your balls, and right away you're getting fuckin' fresh. I'm sorry, I didn't hateful to offend you.
Tommy: I'thou sorry too. It's okay. No problem.
Billy: Okay, salud. [moment of silence equally he takes a drink] Now go home and become ya fuckin' shinebox!
Tommy: [smashes his drinking glass in acrimony] Motherfuckin' mutt! You lot, yous fuckin' slice of shit...! [Henry and Jimmy restrain him]
Baton: [taunting] Yeah, yeah, yeah, come up on, come up on! Come on! Allow him go!
Tommy: Henry, he bought his fucking button! That fake sometime tough guy! You bought your fucking button! Keep that motherfucker here, keep him hither! [leaves]

Tommy: Spider, that cast on your foot is bigger than your fucking head. Next matter you lot know he'll have one of these fucking walkers. But y'all can all the same dance. Requite the states a couple of fucking steps, Spider. Y'all fucking bullshitter, you. Tell the truth. You want sympathy, is that correct, sweetie?
Spider: Why don't you become fuck yourself, Tommy?
[Anybody, but Tommy, laughs]
Jimmy: I didn't hear correct. I can't believe what I heard. [giving Spider cash] This is for you lot. I got respect for this kid, he'south got a lot of fucking assurance. Good for you! Don't take no shit off nobody! A guy shoots him in the foot, he tells him to become fuck himself. Tommy, yous gonna let this fucking punk become away with that? What's this world coming to?
Tommy: [standing and shooting Spider] That's what the fucking earth's coming to, how do ya similar that? How's that?
Henry: What is wrong with yous?!
Jimmy: What is the fucking matter with y'all?! What, are you lot stupid or what?! I was kidding with you. Are you a sick maniac?
Tommy: How do I know you lot're kidding? You breaking my fucking assurance?!
Jimmy: I'm fucking kidding with y'all, you fucking shoot the guy?!
Henry: [inspecting Spider on the floor] He'south dead.
Tommy: [after a brief silence] I'thou a good shot, what practice you want from me?
Anthony: How could you miss at this distance?
Tommy: Yous got a trouble with what I did, Anthony? Fucking rat, anyway. His family's all rats, he'd accept grown up to be a rat.
Jimmy: Stupid bastard, I can't fucking believe yous. Now, you're gonna dig the fucking matter now. You're gonna dig the hole. I got no fucking lime, you're gonna do it.
Tommy: Fine! I'll dig the fucking hole, I don't give a fuck. What is information technology, the kickoff pigsty I always dug? I'll fucking dig the hole. Where are the shovels?

Paulie: [about Henry's cheating] Karen came to the firm. She'southward very upset. This is no good; y'all gotta straighten this out. We gotta have calm.
Jimmy: We don't know what she'll do.
Paulie: She'due south hysterical. Very excited. She's wild. And you got to have it easy. You lot got children. I'thou non maxim go back to her this infinitesimal, but you got to go dorsum. You got to keep up appearances.
Jimmy: I got the ii of them come up to my house every day commiserating, the 2 of them. I just can't have it. I can't practise it, Henry. I can't do information technology. Nobody says y'all tin't do what you lot want. We all know that. This is what it is. We know what information technology is. You take to do what's right. You have to go dwelling to the family unit. You got to become dwelling house, okay? Look at me. You got to go home. Smarten up.
Paulie: I'll talk to Karen. I'll straighten this out. I know merely what to say to her. I'll say you'll go back to her and information technology'll be similar when you lot starting time got married. I'll romance her. It'll be beautiful. I know how to talk to her, peculiarly to her. In the concurrently, Jimmy and Tommy were going to Tampa this weekend. Instead you go with Jimmy.
Jimmy: Y'all come with me.
Paulie: Take a proficient time. Sit down in the lord's day. Take a few days off.
Jimmy: We'll have a skillful time.
Paulie: Later on that, you'll go back to Karen. There's no other way. No divorce. We're not animoli.
Jimmy: No divorce. She'll never divorce him. She'll kill him, just not divorce him. [they laugh]

Karen and her children are visiting Henry in jail
Guard: Mrs. Hill, this way. Sign this book, delight.
Karen signs ledger but something catches her eye
Proper noun of Inmate: Henry Hill
Name of Visitor: Janice Rossi
Visitor's heart
Karen: I saw her, Henry.
Henry: What are yous talking nigh?
Karen: I saw her proper noun in the register.
Henry: Jesus Christ.
Karen: You want her to visit yous? Let her stay up all night, crying and writing letters to the parole board.
Henry: What am I doing hither? Where am I? I'g in jail. I can't stop people from coming to see me.
Karen: Practiced. Let her sneak this stuff every week. [Karen dangles a pocketbook of illegal drugs in front him] Let her fight these bastards every week!
Henry: Look what you lot're doing! Stop it!
Karen: I'g sorry. Permit her sneak this shit in for you.
Henry: Volition yous end it, Karen? Will yous stop it?
Karen: Allow her exercise information technology! Let her do it!
Henry: STOP IT!!!
[Kids react to anger; Karen starts to sob]
Karen: Nobody is helping me. I am all solitary. Belle and Morrie are bankrupt. I asked your friend Remo for the money that he owes you lot, and y'all know what he told me? He told me to take my kids down to the police station and get on welfare.
Henry: Karen, It's going to exist okay.
Karen: Yep? Even Paulie, since he got out, I've never seen him. I never see anybody anymore.
Henry: It's but you and me. That's what happens when you become away. I told y'all that we're on our own. Forget everybody else. Forget Paulie. As long equally he'due south on parole, he doesn't want anybody doing anything.
Karen: I can't do it.
Henry: Yes, you can. Karen, Listen to me. All I need is for you to bring me this stuff. I got a guy in hither from Pittsburgh who'll help me move it. Believe me, in a month we're gonna be fine. Nosotros won't need anybody.
Karen: I'grand agape. I'm agape if Paulie finds out...
Henry: Or I just say, Don't worry near him. He is non helping us out. Is he putting any food on the table? We've gotta help each other. We've simply gotta-- Mind, Nosotros've gotta exist really conscientious while we practise it.
Karen: I don't want to hear a give-and-take well-nigh her anymore, Henry.
Henry: Never.

Henry has but been released from prison house
Henry's Children: Daddy! Are you out for adept? Are y'all coming to my recital? Hither is a moving picture I drew!
Henry takes a await at the depression-hire tenement his wife and kids are looking in and reacts with disgust
Henry: Karen, get packed. Nosotros are moving out. I am going to Pittsburgh tommorow.
Karen: What? You have a meeting with your parole officeholder tommorow.
Henry: Don't worry, they owe me $fifteen,000. Who wants to go to Uncle Paulie's?
Children cheer. Cut to Paulie's house where people have a big dinner. Later Paulie speaks to Henry in private
Paulie: I do non desire any more of that shit.
Henry: I have no thought what'southward going on here.
Paulie: I mean the drugs! I do non want any more of that junk.
Henry: Paulie, why would I want to get mixed up in that?
Paulie: Simply don't do it. I am non talking about what you did in the can. You get a pass for that. In at that place you had to do what you had to do to support your family unit. I am talking about here and now. I do not want to cease up like Gribbs. Gribbs got twenty years simply for maxim good morning to some scuzz who was selling junk behind his back! Gribbs is 70 years onetime; the poor homo is going to die in prison house. And so I am warning everyone, it could be my son, it could be anyone.
[Cut to Henry making cocaine]
Henry: [voiceover] Information technology took me two weeks of sneaking the stuff around, but when I did, it was a real score. In a month I had a downward payment on my house and things were rolling. I knew as long as the cash kept rolling in; Paulie would never find out.

Henry: [sniveling] Paulie, I am really sorry.
Paulie: You fucked up good. You looked me in the center and treated me like shit; like I was nobody.
Henry: I couldn't come to you; not after what you said to me. I was ashamed then; I am ashamed now. I swear on my kids, I am make clean. Only I got nowhere else to become. I could really use some help at present.
Paulie: Take this.
[Paulie pulls a wad of cash out of his pocket and hands it to Henry]
Henry: Thanks.
Paulie: And at present I accept to plow my back on you lot. There is no other way.
Henry: [narrating] My advantage for a lifetime of service to Paulie: $3,200. It was not even enough to pay for my catafalque.

Henry enters a diner
Henry{as narrator}: I got there 15 minutes early on, Jimmy was already there waiting for me.
Jimmy: All my life I said, do not talk on the phone. At present you see why? Do not worry, I think you stand a good take chances of beating this case.
Jimmy: There was a kid we knew, turned out to be a rat.
Henry: Really?
Jimmy: Yeah. Found him hiding in Florida. How would you lot feel almost going with Anthony, take care of that guy?
[Jimmy slips a bulletin with data. Screen freeze-frames]
Henry: [narrating] Jimmy never asked me to whack a guy earlier. Now in the midst of all this he is asking me to go to Florida and do a hit with Anthony? [Screen resumes] That is when I knew I would take never returned from Florida alive.
